Our 'Julmarknad' (as it's called in Swedish) is a traditional pre-Christmas Fair held at the Scandinavian Centre in mid-November where visitors can enjoy Swedish glogg, pastries/baked goods, food, Christmas decorations and goods, Kids Craft Corner, and listen to live music.
This Swedish traditional event held in December features the crowning of the annual Lucia, singing performances by the Swedish School's students, folk dancing, live music, sing-along, and dancing around the Christmas tree.
Lucia traditionally is the bearer of light in the dark Swedish winters. Girls participate until it is their turn to become Lucia - this is a huge milestone as they are recognized by their peers and the Swedish community for this very special tradition in Sweden.

The Lucia Christmas Dinner is held on the evening of the Lucia Celebration. The dinner is a traditional Swedish Smorgasbord.
This event is held at the Scandinavian Centre in Burnaby. What is a Swedish Julbord? Click here for more information.
This celebration at the end of April signifies the coming of Spring. The event is held at Ambleside Beach in West Vancouver, where we light a Valborg bonfire, roast hot dogs and enjoy a Swedish sing along. To learn more Click here
Our Midsummer celebration is held in mid-June (around the Summer Solstice) at the Scandinavian Centre and typically has over 2,000 attendees and more than 40 vendors selling food and goods. There is something for everyone to enjoy - dancing around the Midsummer pole, exploring the troll forest, flower wreath making, Viking Village, musical/dancing performances, Wife Carrying Contest, traditional food and more!

Sweden's National Day (June 6th) is a special day for our community!
This is the date on which Gustav Vasa was crowned King in 1523, which laid the foundation of Sweden as an independent state, and on which a new, important constitution was adopted in 1809.
Since 1983, Sweden has celebrated its National Day on 6 June.
We hold our National Day event annually at the Scandinavian Centre where we enjoy lunch, musical entertainment, games and connecting with family and friends.
